Wondering how to roll a joint? You’re not the only one.

Rolling a joint is a right of passage among cannabis consumers. It’s important to know how to roll your own joints- you can’t rely on your friends forever!

That being said, it can feel incredibly overwhelming. Especially if you spend a lot of time around seasoned pros, it may feel like there’s a large barrier to entry.

Fear not! Your friends probably want to help, as do we.

So consider this article part of your assignment. Soon enough you’ll be rolling joints like a pro left and right!

What is a joint?

A joint is a method of consuming cannabis that is great for an on-the-go solution. Weed joints are composed of ground up cannabis flower rolled with rolling papers. You light the end like a cigarette and inhale to consume.

Joints are perhaps the most stereotypical way to consume cannabis because of how easy they are to use in social settings. It’s easier to bring one along with you than lugging around a bong, they’re discreet, and they can still be used medically.

Rolling joints is also a nice routine to have. Some people roll a new joint every time they want one, while others like to have a joint-rolling session and stock up for a while.

No matter how you choose to roll your joints, you’ll be glad you learned how!

Joints vs Blunts vs Spliffs

Joints are cannabis wrapped in rolling papers. These are your golden standard. People love joints for travel, consuming outdoors, and even just to pass around recreationally.

Blunts are cannabis wrapped in tobacco leaf. This adds a bit of a tobacco flavor, and people find that tobacco leaves burn well as a wrap. If you want to know how to roll a blunt, this article is useful for that too.

Spliffs are a combination of cannabis and tobacco wrapped in rolling papers. Spliffs taste more like cigarettes than blunts or joints do due to the tobacco. If you’re wondering how to roll a spliff, don’t worry- it’s about the same as joints!

Joints, blunts, and spliffs are all a matter of preference. Some people smoke one exclusively. Others jump between them depending on their mood. And sometimes certain ones are saved as treats for special occasions.

Regardless, it’s helpful to know what each one is and the purpose it serves.

How much weed is in a joint?

Joints are like snowflakes- no two will ever be the same. While you will tend to discover roughly how much weed you like in your joints, you’ll never get it exactly the same.

So how many grams in a blunt? Standard dispensary prerolls contain about .5 or 1.0 grams of cannabis. Prerolls are ways for dispensaries to sell ready-made joints. When you’re rolling joints left and right, it can be nice to have a break every once in a while!

How to roll the perfect weed joint

Rolling the perfect weed joint consists of a few easy steps:

  1. Grind the cannabis
  2. Make your crutch
  3. Fill the rolling paper with cannabis
  4. Roll the joint
  5. Pack it in and seal it up
If you master these steps, you’ll be rolling the perfect weed joints in no time! Let’s go over some easy ways to roll a joint.

Grind the cannabis

The ultimate cannabis grinders contain three levels and sharp teeth. Grinding cannabis should be smooth like butter and not hard to do.

If you feel excessive resistance while grinding your weed, it might be time to save up for a new grinder.

Make a crutch

There are lots of different ways to make a crutch.

Perhaps the most common method is to fold your filter into an accordion-style W or Z. Be careful to keep the filter tight so as not to leave the holes too wide- the whole point is for it to filter the smoke!

Fill the rolling paper with cannabis

Leave room on one end of the rolling paper to put the filter in. Some cannabis will fall out when you roll it and pack it, so be prepared to add more as you go- it’s normal!

Hold the paper in place with one hand and use the other hand to gently grab cannabis from the grinder and place it in the center of the paper, in a line. You can also pour/sprinkle the cannabis directly from the grinder, although this takes some extra finesse.

Gently lift the edges of the rolling paper to make a nice line of cannabis that will be easy to roll.

Roll the joint

Hold the joint with all four fingers in the back and your thumbs on the front. Gently roll the joint back and forth between your fingers to get the cannabis into the shape of the soon-to-be joint. This also packs the weed together a little bit.

Now it’s time to literally roll the joint! Find the sticky end of your rolling paper and leave it be. Take the non-sticky end and carefully tuck it beneath the cannabis so as to encompass it.

Pack it in and seal it up

Lick the sticky part of the rolling paper and stick it to the rest of the rolling paper, effectively sealing the joint. Then use the back of a pen to pack the cannabis further down into the joint towards the filter.

Now you can top off your joint with some extra weed.

To finish up, pinch and twist the last bit of rolling paper.

That’s all there is to it!
