What Is Kush and What Makes It a Popular Cannabis Strain?

Kush

If you’re reading this article you’re probably wondering, “What is Kush?”

Kush, or “good kush”, has become slang that refers to really high quality cannabis. But in reality, Kush is actually a classification of cannabis strain originating from the Hindu Kush mountains. This mountain range falls in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Although native to such a specific region, Kush quickly made its way around the world and has been crossbred with nearly every strain imaginable.

What Are the Key Characteristics of Kush Cannabis?

Let’s talk about the appearance, scent, and flavor of kush cannabis strains- all of the kush characteristics.

Kush cannabis is deep green with purple undertones and has bright orange pistils. Kush bud is famously dense.

Kush cannabis has a gassy, earthy smell and the kush taste is exploding with citrus.

What Is Kush Used For?

Kush is used in flower, vape, edible, and dab form.

There are many ways to consume kush strains. Perhaps the most popular is by smoking. You can smoke out of a bong or bowl, or can also smoke a joint.

If you get a dry herb vaporizer then you can use kush without the harmful effects of smoking.

Kush edibles from dispensaries are consistently dosed, whereas homemade edibles are less precise.

Dabbing kush includes using either a dab rig or an eNail.

Is Kush Typically Considered an Indica or Sativa Strain?

Let’s cut to the chase: is kush indica or sativa?

Kush is always indica-heavy.

What Are the Different Types of Kush Cannabis Strains?

Bubba Kush is about 20 years old and has good reason for sticking around so long. Bubba Kush is an 80-20 indica dominant hybrid. Bubba Kush is a cross of OG Kush x Afgani.

Hindu Kush is named after the mountains it hails from. It’s an original strain and one of the last completely pure indicas that exist. Hindu Kush is quite resinous, so it’s popular in concentrate or hash form.

Master Kush is among the most popular indica dominant hybrids on the market. Master Kush got thrown into the spotlight when Snoop Dogg named it as a favorite strain.

OG Kush is a classic cannabis strain that most smokers know about. It’s an indica dominant hybrid that has won numerous awards and has a high THC content.

Pineapple Kush is a cross between OG Pineapple x Master Kush. It’s one of the more recent Kush strains to gain traction.

What Does Kush Taste Like?

Kush has a surprisingly complex taste that’s simultaneously earthy, citrusy, and diesel.

Using clean bongs and bowls greatly improves the taste of your kush. Even though it’s easy to get lazy, a clean bong makes all the difference in how kush tastes.

How Does the Kush Plant Grow

Kush plants are short and bushy- as are all indicas. This means growers don’t need towering ceilings for kush plants.

Another thing to consider when growing kush is how much it smells!

Kush strains have strong genetics and are therefore pretty hardy when it comes to temperature, molds, and pests.

Throw in some short life cycles and high yields, and you’ve got yourself the perfect beginner plant!

Is the Use and Possession of Kush Legal?

Federally, the use and possession of kush is illegal. But its local legality differs from state to state.

The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classified cannabis as a Schedule I substance. This means it’s considered to have a high potential for abuse and no medicinal benefits (supposedly).

Despite this, medical kush is legal in 38 states and DC. The Rohrabacher-Farr amendment of 2014 disallows the federal government from prosecuting patients who are following state laws surrounding cannabis.

Meanwhile, recreational use of kush is legal in 23 states, three territories, and DC. In addition to this, eight states have laws decriminalizing cannabis usage.

Growing kush yourself is legal everywhere that possession is legal besides for in:

  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • New Jersey
  • Washington
This NBC News article has a great map of where kush is legal, and in what sense, last updated in July of 2023 as of writing this piece.

President Biden made a gesture of granting mass clemency to everyone in Federal prison on possession charges. Although this is just a gesture- no one is actually in Federal prison for possession- Biden made a call for state governors to also grant mass clemency. Some organizations estimate that there are around 30,000 people in prison for possession nationwide.

The fight for cannabis pardons is a pillar in the modern day cannabis advocacy movement.

Likewise, workplace drug test laws differ by state and using kush can put people at risk of losing their jobs, even in states where cannabis is legal.
